What Lead Macklemore to Become a Rapper?
Ben Haggert , known as Macklemore, was not born in a musical family his parents , though they supported him through his musical ventures. Macklemore was six years old when hip hop first came to his life by Digital Underground. Macklemore was just fourteen when he started writing his own lyrics. When Macklemore first started to rap he would listen to Wutang Clan, Kriss Kross and Freestyle Fellowship. In an interview he said that Michael Jackson defiantly influenced him.
Macklemore was interested in reaching a younger generation through his music so he started working at a juvenile-detention facility. Macklemore was also part of program called “Gateways,” which organized around rap music. How did Macklemore start getting into the business?
Macklemore and his partner, Ryan Lewis have never signed any record deals through their careers. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis wrote a song called “Jimmy Lovine” which is about how they didn’t and won’t sign any record deals because there money that they are supposed to make is pretty much going to Jimmy Lovine, one of the biggest producers. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis actually haven’t met Jimmy Lovine they just chose him as the producer for the song. In an interview they said that they think he would be a cool guy to meet. In 2008, Macklemore went to rehab for drug-addiction and alcoholism. He celebrated two years of sobriety in early August 2010, as stated during his performance at Capitol Hill Block Party 2010. Macklemore relapsed in December 2011 after returning home from a tour. "Starting Over", a song featured on The Heist, talks about his relapse. He came down with a cold and was prescribed codeine cough syrup eventually leading to the abuse of the drug.
